The Lagos University Teaching Hospital is a foremost tertiary hospital in Nigeria, with over 950 admission beds, Forty-Six (46) Clinical Departments, Eighteen (18) Non-Clinical Departments and Outreaches at both Yaba and Pakoto. Presently the Hospital has over Two Thousand Three hundred (2,300) Staff comprising of Consultants, Resident/Medical Officers, Nurses, Pharmacists, Physiotherapists, Medical Laboratory scientists, Nutritionists, Hospital Administrators, Engineers and other categories of staff.
The Lagos University Teaching Hospital (LUTH) and the Medical School Complex were enacted by a Cabinet decision in April 1961, following recommendations from the Sir Eric Ashby Commission on Post-Secondary Education in Nigeria.

Train at least 100 doctors annually in Nigerian medical schools from 1975 onward
Reorganize hospitals in Lagos, Surulere, Ibadan, Kaduna, and Enugu for clinical teaching
Establish a medical school in Lagos using existing medical institutions

The site was a 92-acre farmland formerly occupied by the Mainland Hospital. Buildings from the Surulere Mainland Hospital were adapted to serve the new Teaching Hospital/Medical School Complex.

LUTH is recognized as one of Nigeria’s top teaching and specialist hospitals. It is designated as a centre of excellence in Dentistry.
LUTH achieved Nigeria’s first successful in-vitro fertilization (IVF) by Professors Osato Frank Giwa-Osagie and Oladapo Ashiru. The hospital also pioneered small incision cataract surgery and has trained over 40 doctors in the procedure.

The Isaac Olusola Dada Dialysis Centre and Renal Institute at LUTH is the largest in Nigeria and is currently functional.
