How Doren Specialist Hospital All Started

The Doren Specialist Hospital was founded in 1996 as Doren Pharmacy & Clinic. Then in 2003, we incorporated and became what we are today. Since then, Doren Specialist Hospital has stood the test of time in healthcare delivery within Lagos. We’ve made a name for ourselves in providing high-standard healthcare delivery to all of our clients within the country.

Now, the hospital was founded by Dr Essien Ekong, a highly respected medical professional with a vision to establish a world-class healthcare facility in Lagos. Dr Ekong recognized the need for specialized medical care in the region, since it’s his place of residence. He aimed to create a hospital of a specialist kind that would offer comprehensive healthcare services under one roof.

Initially, Doren Specialist Hospital started as a small clinic offering general medical services. But with the growing demand for specialized treatments, we expanded our facilities and recruited a team of skilled doctors and healthcare professionals across various disciplines. This expansion allowed the hospital to cater to a wider range of medical conditions and provide advanced treatments to not just Lagos, but the entire South-Western Nigeria.

Meet Doren Specialist Hospital’s Key Leaders

Dr Essien Okon Ekong (B.Sc., MBChB, FWACS, FICS) Chairman/Chief Executive Officer and Head of Surgery

Dr Ekong is a graduate of Obafemi Awolowo University Ile-Ife and a Consultant Orthopaedic Surgeon with over 30 years of experience in practice. He worked for the Ministry of Defence where he successfully rose to Grade Level 17 before retiring. During his time under the Ministry of Defence, he was Chief Consultant Orthopaedic Surgeon for the Military Hospital Yaba and covered clinics for reputable hospitals such as St Nicholas Hospital, Hanoba Clinics, the Airforce Clinic Ikeja, and NNPC in Ikoyi. He was also an examiner for the West African College of Surgeons. To date, he’s a keen believer in passing on knowledge to the younger generation of surgeons and keeping up to date with the newest trends in orthopedic management such as Arthroscopy and Arthroplasty. He’s an active member of the AGMPN and the National Orthopedic Association.

Mrs Dorah Essien Ekong (B. Pharm) Executive Director, Medical Support Services

Mrs Ekong is a graduate of Obafemi Awolowo University School of Pharmacy Ile-Ife with over 35 years of experience in pharmacy practice. Her experience cuts across numerous sectors – clinical, community, and retail pharmacy. She’s been the Superintendent Pharmacist of Doren Pharmacy for the past 35 years. She’s a member of the Pharmaceutical Society of Nigeria (PSN) and related local associations like the Association of Community Pharmacists (ACPN), as well as international bodies like the Federation of International Pharmacists (FIP).

Mr Itoro Essien Ekong (MPharm) Executive Director/Chief Operating Officer

Mr Itoro Ekong was an MPharm graduate of Aston University, Birmingham, United Kingdom in 2011. After qualification, he worked as a Pre-registration Pharmacist with Lloyds Pharmacy in Essex, United Kingdom. Then he sat the qualifying exams to become a Registered Pharmacist with the General Pharmaceutical Council of the United Kingdom. He has vast experience working across different sectors of pharmacy and has also undertaken the role of supervising Intern Pharmacists and training Pharmacy Technicians.

Before joining the team, he worked as a Senior Pharmacist with Celesio, UK to pilot the first fully automated dispensary robot. He was responsible for ensuring the supply chain flow wasn’t compromised. He was also the Safer Care lead, which looked at avenues of reducing errors within the pharmacy network and maintained a high standard of service to clients in the UK.

He’s also a UK certified Pharmacist Practitioner (Independent Prescriber), which gives him the license to run clinics and prescribe medications to patients without the supervision of a Medical Practitioner. His area of clinical competence is the management of Diabetes and Hypertension. He’s proactive in improving patient outcomes regarding these clinical indications. He’s a registered member of the Pharmacist Council of Nigeria and is keen on improving the quality of care delivered to members of the public.

Dr Okore Amalachukwu (MBBS, FMCPaed, DAA) Medical Director/Head of Paediatrics

Dr Okore Amalachukwu is a consultant and general paediatrician with further allergy and asthma management training. She’s passionate about providing quality healthcare for children of every social stratum. She completed her residency training at the Lagos University Teaching Hospital in 2016 and has since practised in one of the foremost paediatric hospitals in Lagos. She’s been a locum member of the Doren Specialist Hospital team for about 10 years and is currently serving as the hospital’s Medical Director.

Dr Afolasade Sariyu Magbagbeola Head of Anaesthesia

Dr Afolasade Sariyu Magbagbeola is a Specialist Anaesthetist with interest in regional anaesthesia and intensive care. She graduated from the University of Ibadan and had her anaesthesia training at the University College Hospital Ibadan. She’s fully registered by the MDCN for specialty practice. She worked as an anaesthetist in reputable hospitals like the Nigerian Army Reference Hospital in Yaba, St. Nicholas Hospital Lagos Island, and CEDACREST Hospital Victoria Island. Presently, she’s the specialist anaesthetist at Doren Specialist Hospital.

Dr Akinsiku Adedamola Oladipupo (MBBS, FMCP) Head of Internal Medicine

Dr Akinsiku Adedamola Oladipupo is a fellow of the National Postgraduate Medical College of Nigeria, member of the International Society of Nephrologists (ISN) and Nigerian Association of Nephrology (NAN). He’s a nephrologist with interests in general nephrology, post-transplant care, and Therapeutic Apheresis. He had his postgraduate training at Lagos University Teaching Hospital with further training in Therapeutic Apheresis at the University of Virginia. He’s a Locum consultant for Lagos State Health Regulatory Body (HEFAMAA).

Also in the Internal Medicine department, we have Dr Opaleye Rasidat Oyenike (MBBS, FWACP), a fellow of the West African College of Physicians and a member of the Nigerian Cardiac Society (NCS). She’s a Cardiologist with interests in general Cardiology and Interventional Cardiology. The department also has resourceful gastroenterologists and Internists among others.

Dr Nwachukwu Ezinne (MD) Senior Resident Anaesthetist

Dr Nwachukwu Ezinne is a Senior Resident Anaesthetist with over 6 years of working experience in the field of Anaesthesia. She’s in the process of completing her advanced training in the speciality while being dedicated to patient care and safety. She’s had extensive exposure with broad knowledge and hands-on experience in several areas of perioperative Anaesthesia for all specialities in both adults and children.

Doren Specialist Hospital Diagnostic Services: How We Find Out What’s Wrong

The hospital has a functional and state-of-the-art medical laboratory that’s fully equipped with world-class machines and equipment. Our pathology laboratory is equipped with modern instruments for conducting a comprehensive range of blood tests, urine tests, molecular diagnostics, histopathology, and other essential investigations. These tests aid in the detection and monitoring of various diseases and provide valuable insights for treatment planning.

Doren Specialist Hospital boasts a comprehensive suite of imaging services that employ the latest technology for accurate diagnosis.

X-ray Imaging X-ray imaging is widely used for detecting bone fractures, lung infections, and other conditions. We utilize digital X-ray technology, ensuring high-resolution images with reduced radiation exposure for patients. Though the hospital operates state-of-the-art X-ray machines in all its centres, we also have C-arm X-Ray machines in all our theatres. Each X-Ray unit has a Digitizer, which produces a digital radiographic image instantly on a computer. This can be transferred or transmitted electronically. Apart from the X-ray processing units, our Radiology units have ultrasound scanners, Doppler ultrasound, Echocardiography machines, and Electrocardiography (ECG) machines.

Ultrasound Scan Ultrasound imaging uses sound waves to produce real-time images of organs, blood vessels, and unborn babies. We employ state-of-the-art ultrasound machines that facilitate accurate diagnoses across multiple specialities – obstetrics, cardiology, and gastroenterology.

Computed Tomography (CT) Scan CT scans provide detailed cross-sectional images of the body, enabling the detection of tumours, injuries, vascular disorders, and other abnormalities. Our advanced CT scanners produce precise images while minimizing patient discomfort. The facility in Imalete-Alafia, Ibeju-Lekki, Lagos, Nigeria houses and operates a state-of-the-art CT scan machine.

We also collaborate with external reference laboratories to provide specialized tests and infectious disease diagnostics among others. These tests help in the diagnosis, management, and monitoring of specific conditions.

Accident and Emergency / Rescue Services: The hospital runs the busiest A&E (accident and emergency) unit in the whole of Lekki-Ajah axis. We’re a centre of choice and referral in the event of an emergency. Our E.R nurses and doctors are highly trained and experienced to provide care for a wide range of medical, surgical, paediatric, obstetric, and gynaecological emergencies.

Ambulance Services: The hospital has a state-of-the-art ambulance complete with standard equipment, a ventilator, a Defibrillator, Oxygen, and emergency drugs. The service is available 24 hours a day to cater for all emergencies, standby during events, and patient transfer from/to the hospital.

Pharmaceutical Services: The pharmacy/dispensary is fully stocked with NAFDAC approved prescription drugs to cater for all patients. The unit is run by well-trained and experienced Pharmacists who are assisted by pharmacy technicians.

Antenatal Services: The hospital has a team of experienced and skilled obstetricians and gynaecologists who oversee robust antenatal services in the Lekki-Ajah axis.

Family Planning and Immunization Services: The hospital offers family planning counselling and procedures to aid parents and families in determining their family size and the spacing of their children.

Health Screening Packages: Health screenings are very important to detect diseases, many of which don’t show early warning signs. The hospital offers comprehensive screening packages.

Nephrology Clinic: The hospital has a consultant Nephrologist who ensures that co-morbidities associated with acute kidney disease are managed promptly, while those with chronic kidney conditions are also managed to prevent end-stage renal disease.

Eye Clinic: At Doren Specialist Hospital, there’s an in-house optometrist. The optometrist carries out basic eye examination including visual acuity, fundoscopy, and management of common eye diseases.

Psychiatric and Clinical Psychology: The hospital is committed to the total wellbeing of its clients. The mental health clinic is headed by a consultant psychiatrist who is ably assisted by a clinical psychologist and a mental health nurse.
